ROWDY RATHORE movie review: Total timepass, total formula film!

Entertainment is what this Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha starrer is all about – a very massy, masala, dhinchaak khichdi of songs, dance and fight sequences
While thinking about Rowdy Rathore, we remember what Vidya Balan famously said as Silk in The Dirty Picture – it’s all about entertainment, entertainment, entertainment. There is colour and sound, and singing and dancing, and lots of maar-dhaad dhishum dhishum stuff going on in Rowdy Rathore, all of which you would logically expect in a Salman Khan film. In fact, halfway through this one, even as Akshay Kumar contorts his face and revs up to punch the baddie, you are suddenly transported to last year, and that feeling flashes across your brain that you could be watching Wanted or Ready or Dabangg. But hang on, this is not a Salman Khan-starrer. It is the comeback to action clarion call from Akshay – the man who has been doing mindless comedy and the occasional quiet drama for a few years now. So just what is going on? Yeh kya ho raha hai?

Welcome to the wild world of Rowdy Rathore. Akshay plays a double role, one side of him being the petty thief Shiva, who aims straight for the seeti-bajaaoing front benchers, while the other side – the law-enforcer Vikram Rathod – directs his attention to the more serious viewers who look for acting rather than action. Akshay revels and excels in both, even though we cannot help but think that perhaps he is getting a little old for all the romancing and bashing up goons sequences. Nonetheless, we are riveted as he wields his fists, his weapons and his wit with equal elan.

Keeping the song and dance thing going in the first half is Sonakshi Sinha, who fits the rustic part with her generous curves and her hip-swinging movements. She wisely sticks to her image as a village belle, her eyes as gorgeous as they were in Dabangg, and the whole ghagra-choli gaon-ki-chhori act is spot-on. Ace-bad guy Nasser is superbly nasty, while the other characters play their parts with finesse, though you sometimes wonder why they are there at all.

The star of this particular show is the director, Prabhu Deva, whose skill as a choreographer is in full evidence in Rowdy Rathore’s songs. Even as Pritam pyaare repels with its blatantly sexist dance moves and double entendres, Chinta ta ta has people jigging in the aisles. There is far less potty humour, if any, and mercifully little that could be called ‘vulgar’, which makes this one a fun watch without parents having to cover their kid’s eyes and ears. The violence, yes, is gratuitous in parts, but the pace of the film overrides any lack of real plot, and the flying blood and gore that could be disturbing if any time was spent lingering on those scenes.

A fun watch, if that is all that is wanted from a film.

Review: 'Rowdy Rathore'

'Rowdy Rathore', a remake of the Telugu smash hit 'Vikramarkudu' [2006], marks the return of Akshay Kumar in the action genre after a hiatus. Directed by the supremely talented and super-successful S.S. Rajamouli and starring Ravi Teja, the movie was a gigantic victory at the turnstiles. It was later remade in Tamil as 'Siruthai', in Kannada as 'Veera Madakari' and in Bengali as 'Bikram Singha: The Lion is Back'. The Telugu film, 'Vikramarkudu', was also dubbed in Hindi as 'Pratighat - A Revenge'.

So is 'Rowdy Rathore' a replica of 'Vikramarkudu'? Like 'Wanted', director Prabhu Deva scrounges the essence, retains the distinctive design of the quintessence, but alters it slightly. But what doesn't change is the intent of making a full-blown masala entertainer. Yes, 'Rowdy Rathore' is vintage masala fare that has a larger-than-life hero, who triumphs against all odds.

Final word? Entertainment, entertainment, entertainment thy name is 'Rowdy Rathore'.

Vivid colors, rustic background and conventional dance routines... 'Rowdy Rathore' follows the existing trend to create more homespun, home-flavored desi movies rather than pursue the money-spinning NRI souk that has, until recently, been the order of the day. While the central plot is pretty commonplace, the screenplay packs a solid punch, with several clap-trap situations interlaced in the narrative, though it slips into the knowable zone at times. Sure, there are a few limp moments, but a swift narrative outweighs this inadequacy. Besides, stability is maintained in both halves of the film. While the first hour of the film is replete with entertainment, the second half gets into the action mode [the flashback portions are outstanding], but the entertainment values are maintained at the same level. This one is the emblematic formula movie with distinct essentials that Indian masses yearn for.

Prabhu Deva's spirited execution of the subject forms another USP. His handling of the dramatic sequences deserves brownie points. Also, he proves with 'Rowdy Rathore' that 'Wanted' was no mere stroke of luck or just a flash in the pan. Santosh Thundiyil's cinematography is first-rate. Music composers Sajid-Wajid deliver yet another charming album. 'Chinta Ta Ta' is the pick of the lot and the presence of leading actors Vijay and Kareena Kapoor and Prabhu Deva himself gives it an edge, while 'Dhadang Dhang Dhang' and 'Aa Re Pritam Pyaare' are lively, full-of-zest tracks as well. The background [Sandeep Chowta] score is electrifying. Dialogue [Shiraz Ahmed] are excellent. The witty and sober lines are written with equivalent flamboyance. The stunts are, of course, the hallmark of the enterprise. Note the fight at the interval point, during the flashback portions and also towards the climax. The masses are sure to go into raptures!

Akshay is cast in a double role -- one as a cop and the second one as a petty thief -- and both the roles are custom-made for the endearing actor. As Shiva, he entertains the masses, whereas as Vikram Rathod, he aims at serious movie lovers. The movie bestows Akshay with abundant opportunity to flaunt each shade of his skill. Sonakshi plays a lovable, charming yet impish character very well. You will see the voluptuous side of Sonakshi in this film and the character she portrays has tremendous mass appeal. Also, the desi girl image suits her impeccably.

Nassar is superb as the antagonist. Ditto for the actor who essays the part of his brother. He's venomous to the hilt! Mushtaq Khan provides a few laughs. Paresh Ganatra, as Akshay's buddy, is truly funny. Yashpal Sharma is top notch. Gurdeep Kohli is first-rate. Anant Jog and Darshan Jariwala are adequate. The child artist portraying the part of Akshay's daughter is really cute.

On the whole, 'Rowdy Rathore' is designed to magnetize the masses in hordes. The accurate blend of action, emotions, drama and humor, besides a superlative performance by Akshay Kumar, makes this motion picture an immensely pleasurable and delightful movie watching experience. If you savor typical masaledaar fares, this one should be on your have-to-watch listing for certain. Dhamaal entertainer!

Bol Bachchan Trailer and Posters

Flying Cars, Wire Fu, Iris scorching colors, punny one liners! It’s time for another Rohit Shetty picture but even with all his usual tropes after last year’s very enjoyable (although completely forgettable) Singham, we might slowly be beaten into submission and actually look forward to his movies!

Allegedly an adaptation of 1979's Golmaal and not his own box office record breaking Golmaal series. The title is confusing and the success of which has been astounding, his movies are hated by critics but loved by family audiences. (think Michael Bay)

The trailer starts the legacy of movies he has created we see the movie posters of all his movies and pretty much tells the audience to shut up and just watch the movie. We quickly get introductory shots of long time collaborator, friend of director Rohit Shetty and producer Ajay Devgn who plays a village wrestler/goonda and Abhishek Bachchan ( presence we love in movies and probably one of the main reason we are looking forward to it) whose trying to convince Ajay that he is in fact 2 different people, this is where the fake moustaches comes in handy, after a few non speaking shots of heroinces Asin (who I can’t distinguish anymore if she’s in Ready, Housefull2 or Bol Bachchan) and Priya Desai.
We get a bit of singing, a bit of dancing and both Ajay Devgn and Abhishek hanging on wires and fighting people, which can be fun but loses its impact after a while, which was one of our complaints with Singham (of which you can read the review here). The meta and self referential humour is funny both in Abhishek’s real life persona and Ajay’s filmi ones.
Some of the visual gags are funny and this seems the perfect environment for Archana Puran Singh’s loud acting but lord do the colors are so bright our eyes might start suffering from diabetes!
If you are already on the Shetty boat, then you are in for a fun ride, and if you aren’t then maybe the trailer can convince you?
Bol Bachchan comes out 6th of July in theaters

Will Smith slaps reporter who tries to kiss him at ‘Men in Black 3’s’ Moscow Premiere

Don't get fresh with the Prince of Bel-Air.

Will Smith gave a backhanded slap to a Ukranian reporter Friday after the man planted a surprise smooch near the actor's lips at the "Men in Black 3" premier in Moscow, TMZ.com reported.

"Come on man. What the hell is your problem buddy?" Smith snapped when the back-patting hug turned into a kamikaze kiss attack.

After a forceful shove, the "Ali" star ended the encounter with his left hand smacking the young man's cheek.

"Sorry. He kissed me on my mouth," Smith said as he continued down the red carpet with cameras rolling.

"The joker is lucky I didn't sucker punch him," he quipped.

"I'm so sorry," one of his shocked female handlers said.

"No, no. It's all good," Smith said with a laugh as he moved on to the next interview.

The reporter, notorious for kissing celebrities, quickly leaves after his encounter with the Hollywood star.

The reporter - looking like a wannabe wiseguy in a black shirt, white tie and white suit - slinked away without comment and stood behind a camera.

He's a TV personality who often kisses celebrities as part of his shtick, according to TMZ.

The incident follows just days after Smith said he agrees with President Obama's support of gay marriage.

"If anybody can find someone to love them and to help them through this difficult thing that we call life, I support that in any shape or form," he told reporters in Berlin on Monday.

Satyamev Jayate creates two stars

Aamir Khan’s chat show Satyamev Jayate has created two new stars — Harrish Iyer and Cindrella Prakash. They appeared on last  Sunday’s episode and shared their stories of being sexually abused as children. Soon after the episode went on air, people started coming up to Iyer asking him to

pose for pictures, while Cindrella had to escape to the hills to get away from the sudden attention. It’s hard to cope with fame that stems from trauma, they say.

‘I have 100 marriage proposals now’
SatyamevWhen 25-year-old musician Cindrella Prakash admitted on the show that she is single, little did she know that she would be bombarded with so many marriage proposals.

“I have over 100 marriage proposals now. In fact, there is a mail from a guy that says, ‘I want to marry you. I’m doing my masters from IIT Mumbai, please tell me what you think.’ I was laughing,” she says, adding, “I’ve got around 1000 mails, and calls from Pakistan, London, New Zealand. A Pakistani girl living in America called me and said that they are not allowed to watch TV , but that she managed to watch my episode and it uplifted her. It is overwhelming.” But, there are negative reactions too.

“A relative called and said to me, ‘Why did you have to speak about it on TV?’”
‘People give up their seats to me’
His Blackberry hasn’t stopped flashing, people have been offering him their seats in the Bombay local, and he has never had so many mails in his inbox.
Guy“I am a guy who can’t sleep if I have one unread mail. And I had 6000+ last night,” says Mumbai-based blogger activist Harrish Iyer, 33, who appeared on the show.

“What’s a better feeling than strangers believing in you and sharing their darkest secret?” he says, adding, “It is a huge responsibility as well ... I can’t let my fatigue show in my replies. Sometimes, the most difficult thing is to be pepped up to answer mails when all you want to do is log out and cry.” Iyer says he feels “odd” posing for pics.
“One person got his whole family and introduced me to them like I am some kumbh-ke-mele mein bichda hua bhai!”

How to Access Blocked sites on Airtel/Reliance -

Internet users in India using Airtel Broadband and Reliance Broadband service must have recently noticed that both these ISP’s have blocked a majority of popular torrent sites in India since last night (May, 16th). Besides the torrent sites and illegal file sharing services, these leading internet service providers have also blocked access to sites such as xmarks.com, pastebin.com which is a sort of surprise as these services don’t serve any copyrighted or infringing content. According to Medianama, the reason behind this severe block is a ‘court ban’, following a John Doe order taken by Copyright Labs, Chennai, to prevent piracy of Tamil Films – Dhammu (Tamil) and 3 (Telugu).

Upon visiting any of these below listed websites on Airtel or Reliance Internet, you will see the following message “Access to this site has been blocked as per Court Orders”. On the contrary, BSNL and MTNL users are reporting that they’re able to access all the blocked sites easily. We’re not sure but this ban seems region specific as some users are able to access the banned sites in India on the above mentioned private ISP’s.
